Behavioural management

There is no such thing as a ‘bad child’. At times, however it can seem as if there is an almost endless list of undesirable behaviours. Navigating and tackling these can prove a challenge to parents, carers and teachers even at the best of times. When it feels like you've tried everything, or are mystified as to the whys and wherefores of your child’s behaviour, advice, strategies and an objective view from a professional with twenty years of knowledge and experience, can make a world of difference.

The list below is by no means exhaustive, but highlights the most frequent issues I encounter working in homes, schools, nurseries and day-care settings all over the U.K. and abroad.

·         Biting

·         Hitting

·         Tantrums and other anger issues

·         Refusal to cooperate with parents/authority figures

·         Impulse control

·         Social skills and friendships

·         Sibling rivalry and jealousy

·         Trouble adapting to a new baby, new home, school or care setting

·         Regression

·         Rudeness and inappropriate language

·         Unsafe behaviour ( ignoring boundaries )

Just as every child and parent is unique, so is every challenge they encounter. Although a ‘behaviour’ may be common (or sometimes not), the motivation, feelings, associations and ‘drivers’ are individual in every case. A one size fits all solution from a parenting book may not always work.

However much the Super Nannies of this world may champion Naughty Steps, Naughty Chairs and Time Outs, these will only deal with the outward signs of a problem. Unless the root cause of the ‘acting out’ is identified, when one’ undesirable’ behaviour is stopped, another may emerge to replace it.

My expertise lies in not just analysing the behaviour, but in working out the motivation and reason behind it, then developing a strategy that not only stops it in its tracks but resolves its cause.
