Emergency First Response
First aid and CPR training for Parents and Carers
Courses available one-to-one or in small groups; in your own home or public venue
Parenthood brings its own special worries and concerns as your child learns to navigate the everyday world. The list of potential dangers can seem endless and daunting. Choking on solids, cut knees on playgrounds, allergic reactions, banged heads, high temperatures, weird rashes, swallowing that shiny loose change…
No matter how hard you try and how closely you watch your little one, everyone acknowledges that the odd bump and bruise is inevitable, especially during the great explorations of toddlerhood. You may not be able to grow eyes in the back of your head, but you can learn how to deal confidently with a childhood accident or worrying symptom if it occurs. At the very least knowledge is a comfort, and at the most it could save your child’s life.
The Emergency First Response ‘Care for Children’ course is an innovative CPR and First Aid training course that teaches parents and carers how to provide emergency care for injured or ill children and babies. Participants learn about the types of medical emergencies that children face, and how they differ from adult conditions. Teaching stresses the importance of attending to basic emergency situations, the emotional aspects of caring for a child in these circumstances, secondary care, preventing common injuries and recognising common childhood illnesses.
The course trains the rescuer to follow the same priorities of care used by medical professionals. The student quickly masters these priorities and the procedures in a non-stressful learning environment (for example, in your own home) and gives you the confidence you need when giving help in a real emergency.
The Primary Care (CPR) portion of the course prepares the rescuer to render aid to an infant or child with a life-threatening emergency such as choking or cardiac arrest.
The Secondary Care (first aid skills) portion focuses on developing continued patient care skills and building the rescuer's confidence to render first aid to an infant or child in need when emergency medical services are either delayed or unavailable.
The Care for Children course content is based on guidelines from the Paediatric Working Group of ILCOR.
The courses offered are either of 6 or 12 hours. This can be broken up into 1-3 sessions in whichever way works best for you.
All candidates receive a text-book, one-to-one tuition on the CPR manikins (including baby manikin), a key-fob barrier kit for use in emergency and can purchase a DVD skills guide to enhance their learning.
A short paper based test at the end of the course reinforces the course material. Passing this test gives EFR certification. This is conferred by the governing body and is confirmed by the awarding of a named certification card sent by post.
A recent client found the course was “Well executed and fun at the same time, even though we were dealing with a very serious issue”. Another client had cause to use her skills and although she "thought I wouldn't know what to do, when it came down to it I found myself asking all the right questions and doing everything I should be doing without even really realising it! I'd not long re-read the book and the training just kicked in."
(Courses in adult care are also available)
